HOME OF AMERICAN GOLF?

Golf began in these sandy rolling hills with a nine-hole course built by an amateur in 1898 for guests at the new health resort of James W. Tufts. That first course, later redesigned and extended to 18 holes by Donald Ross, became Pinehurst No. 1. This legendary Scottish designer was so enamored of the area that he made it his home for 48 years, also designing Pinehurst's Nos. 2, 3 and 4 (redesigned in 2000 by Tom Fazio), and the courses at Pine Needles and Mid Pines. When you play these courses, you are walking in the footsteps of many of golf's greatest legends -- Bobby Jones, Byron Nelson, Arnold Palmer, Ben Hogan, Babe Zaharias, to name a few.  In addition to the 1999 U.S. Open Championship played at Pinehurst No. 2, area courses have hosted numerous other professional and amateur tournaments. The center of golf in the Sandhills area is, and has been for nearly 100 years, Pinehurst No. 2. But today the area, the Home of American Golf?, offers 43 exceptional courses and the number is growing. Put a few of these courses on your "Must Play" list. Bring your best game, and savor the experience. The memories are sure to last a lifetime.
