MYRTLE BEACH, SC -- The four prestigious new courses by four of
golf's
top designers are now open for play. They're not cheap -- green fees run in the $150 range
at peak season, but do include cart. And where else can you find four such famously
designed championship courses with such amazing attention to detail, side by side? They're
well worth your money.
Myrtle Beach has had a number of top-rated courses for many years, but
the opening of the four Barefoot courses in April 2000 and the recent openings of the
World Tour Golf Links and Tournament Players Club courses takes golf in Myrtle Beach to
grand new heights.
Located in Barefoot Resort, a unique high end residential/resort
community currently being developed, the four courses grace three miles of the scenic
Intracoastal Waterway in North Myrtle Beach opposite the popular
shopping/dining/entertainment complex Barefoot Landing. Following are overviews of the
four courses:
The Dye Course (Pete Dye)
The Dye Course is the only semi-private facility at Barefoot Resort and
will have its own clubhouse featuring fantastic views of holes 9, 10 and 18. The clubhouse
will offer private member areas, fine dining, a full fitness complex and elegant lodging
accommodations for the most discriminating traveler.
- Pete Dye upholds his reputation of building memorable and challenging
golf courses by creating a stunning design filled with his infamous pitfalls to capture
wary shots. However, if played from the appropriate set of tees, players of all abilities
will be able to navigate the Dye Course.
- The course is a Par 72, 7,343-yard layout that encourages walking for
guests and members with gated, exclusive real estate only on the exterior perimeter of the
property.
- Pete Dye is famous for his use of native grasses. The fairways are GN-1
Bermuda, a hybrid developed by Greg Norman Turf. The greens are L-93 Bentgrass and the
dramatic visual effects are achieved by the Centipede, Zoysia and TifDwarf Bermuda roughs.
The Fazio
Course (Tom Fazio)
The Fazio Course at Barefoot Resort is routed through a spectacular piece
of property in the heart of Barefoot Resort. Like many European courses, the course does
not return to the clubhouse after nine holes. It is not a British linksland course, but
rather a classic Lowcountry course, filled with live oaks, pines, sand, wetlands and
native grasses.
- Located between the Dye Course and the Love Course, the Fazio course has
been strategically designed, incorporating extensive tree cover and many lakes into the
landscaping.
- Native and formal bunkers have been handcrafted and placed for visual and
strategic effect, while natural elevation changes add a sense of drama and excitement to
the golfing round.
- Water features can be seen on 15 holes, yet many lakes are in out-of-play
areas to ensure playability.
- The Fazio Course is a Par 72, approximately 6,989 yards long. The course
has four sets of tees to give players of all skill levels the opportunity to play a course
of championship caliber and still have the right balance of fun and challenge.
- More than 30 acres of native grasses have been planted. Tees and Fairways
will consist of GN-1, which is a hybrid turf developed by Greg Norman Turf. The approach
areas will consist of Tiff Sport grass. Green surfaces will be A-1 bentgrass and the rough
areas will be 419 Bermuda.
The Love Course (Davis Love
III)
The Love Course at Barefoot Resort is a traditional course with a
Lowcountry character and incorporates Davis Love IIIs Carolina golfing experiences
in the design.
- The visually striking course features course generous landing areas and
greens complexes similar to those found at the 1999 U.S. Open.
- The diversity of the land enabled some holes to be more open and employ a
"Links" strategy layout. These holes feature cross-bunkers and waste areas
designed to allow players of different skill levels to take alternate routes to achieve
the same score. Other holes focus on accuracy with holes winding their way through
woodlands and wetlands.
- The course included as much of the existing land features as possible,
including areas of archeological and historical interest. Unique to the Love course is a
replica of the ruins of a 17th Century plantation house, similar to those found
along holes in Scotland and Ireland.
- The Love course is a Par 72 and is approximately 7,200 yards long. The
course will challenge the good player, yet provide playability and enjoyment for the
average player.
- The course will play as a "core course," meaning that only
about 25% of the holes will have adjacent housing.
- Tees and Fairways consist of GN-1, which is a hybrid turf developed by
Greg Norman Turf. The approach areas will consist of Tiff Sport grass. The greens surface
will be A-1 Bentgrass and the rough areas will be 419 Bermuda.
The Norman Course (Greg Norman)
The Norman Course features seven holes along the Intracoastal Waterway
and offers a variety of distinctly different golf holes. A major objective of Greg Norman
Design Team was to take the natural beauty that existed on the site and simply enhance it
by highlighting the natural vistas.
- The stunning waste areas and the sites natural vegetation were used
to frame each hole. The course resembles one found in the deserts of the Southwest,
without the desert. For example, one hole has fairways that flow into the native areas
surrounding the course while another hole features fairway and a partial rough
transitioning into the native areas. A third distinction is a formal rough that
encompasses the entire golf hole.
- There are no angular or artificial lines in the shape of the course.
Bunkers have sloping white faces (similar to a MacKenzie style golf course) with
intermittent sod wall bunkering at strategic locations throughout the course.
- The Norman Course is a Par 72, approximately 7,200 yards long and was
designed with Normans philosophy to bring into play the "bump and run"
shots around the greens. This will give the player the option to play a number of
different shots.
- The greens are gently undulating and consist of an average green area of
6,300 square feet.
- Tees and Fairway consist of GN-1, which is a hybrid turf developed by
Greg Norman Turf. The approach areas are Tiff Dwarf grass and greens surfaces consist of
A-1 bentgrass. The rough areas are Zoyia and GN-2, allowing for a dramatic color and
texture contrast between the areas that are maintained as fairways versus roughs.
