When architect Dan Maples set out
to create a different kind of golf course
in Myrtle Beach, the earth moved -
literally.

The
Wizard - Hole 13 |
Maples
moved an astounding 800,000 cubic yards of
earth and, as if by magic, brought a bit
of mountain golf to Myrtle Beach. The
transformed landscape is full of devilish
elevation changes unlike anything in the
area, with even a touch of rock bridges.
The dramatic elevation changes enhance the
beauty and challenge.
This course is destined
to be a "must play" on the Grand
Strand. If you thought all beach courses
were alike, just wait until you fall under
The Wizard's power.

WIZARD
COMMENTS
FROM VISITORS |
We'd like to introduce
you to a favorite course in Myrtle Beach.
Not only is The Wizard one of Myrtle
Beach's finest and most interesting
courses, it ranks with some of our
country's best layouts. Here are a few
reasons why.
"One of the reasons we love it here
so much is that it's the home of some of
America's best golf."

The
Wizard - Hole 1 |
"When I'm playing
The Wizard I get the feeling I'm playing
one of the classic courses in Ireland. The
stone castle clubhouse looks like it might
have been home to an ancient Celtic
Wizard. Maybe that's part of the reason my
favorite hole is the first. A dogleg
right, 569-yard Par 5, Hole #1 lies along
the west side of the lake, with water
bordering the length of the fairway.
The wind always seems to be a factor out
there. If it's favorable I can reach the
green in two, but if I have to shoot
against the wind it'll take me three. My
advise is to play to the left to avoid the
pair of bunkers at 272 yards.
The green is nice and large, but be
careful of the bunker that guards it on
the left side."

The
Wizard - Hole 17 |
"Hole #17 is my
favorite. When playing The Wizard for the
first time, you never know what to expect
next and #17 is no exception. After more
than a dozen holes of moving up, down and
around the mounds and hills, this 180-yard
Par 3 brings you back out onto the lake
with an island green. Not only does it
require a careful shot, but also a careful
choice of clubs. I've used anywhere from a
7 iron to a 1, depending on wind
conditions. An awesome golf hole."
"If you thought that golf courses at
the beach lacked elevation changes, wait
until you play The Wizard. Dan Maples
created a landscape that will remind you
of the mountains. Take Hole #13, for
example. It's a 408-yard, Par 4 that plays
through a valley, surrounded by towering
mounds covered with all kinds of flowers,
shrubs, and Love grass. That Love grass is
beautiful, but it's a beast if you get
caught in it. The slight dogleg right of
the layout is perfect for my left-to-right
shot. The second shot is onto a large
undulating green, guarded by two bunkers
in the front. Shooting par on #13 is a
satisfying experience!"
